SUMMARY:Blockchain\, Photonics\, & Electronics\, and Digital Identity building blocks for Virtual Worlds
DESCRIPTION:OPENVERSE\, in its work as a Coordination and Support Action\, is pulling together a community of key stakeholders engaged in the promotion and uptake of Virtual Worlds enabling technologies. \nThe community of stakeholders is organised according to different building blocks\, as outlined by the European Commission’s Staff Working Document: information\, insights and market trends on web 4.0 and virtual worlds (2023). \nIn this workshop\, OPENVERSE explores Blockchain\, Photonics and Electronics as foundational enablers of Virtual Worlds. While Photonics and Electronics form the physical and infrastructural backbone that enables ultra-fast connectivity and high-performance computing\, Blockchain establishes trust\, transparency\, and decentralized governance across digital ecosystems. Digital Identity\, in turn\, empowers individuals and entities with secure\, verifiable\, and interoperable representations of self within these environments.\nTogether\, these technologies create a trusted\, high-speed\, and user-centric foundation for immersive\, persistent\, and interoperable Virtual Worlds\, where authenticity\, performance\, and sovereignty converge. \nParticipants will explore how these architectures\, frameworks\, and toolchains support the creation\, operation\, and governance of Virtual Worlds across use cases with the aim of: \n\nGather insights into the OPENVERSE Technological Framework\, particularly regarding how those technologies shape Virtual World infrastructures and integration across building blocks.\nFoster collaboration among European initiatives advancing VWs\, promoting synergies and knowledge exchange with other OPENVERSE assets\, such as the Observatory.\n\nTo ensure broad participation\, OPENVERSE will invite: \n\nIdentified EU-funded initiatives in its stakeholder network already deploying Blockchain\, Photonics and Electronics\, and Digital Identity within Virtual World use cases; and\nNew contributors\, through an open call for presentations\, showcase architectures\, blueprints\, standards\, and lessons learned from pilots\, testbeds\, and theoretical frameworks.\n\nThe workshop will be organised in two 1-hour blocks. The first will look at blockchain and digital identity\, the second on photonics and electronics. \nOutcomes from the event will be synthesised into a consolidated report feeding directly into the OPENVERSE Technological Framework and related instruments\, helping Europe advance toward trusted\, human-centric Virtual Worlds. \nWorkshop activities \nThe workshop will start with a short introduction by the OPENVERSE project\, giving participants an overview of the agenda and the reason why the workshop was organised. \nAfter the introduction\, the OPENVERSE team in charge of drafting the Technological Framework will present it in detail and address targeted questions that will spark discussion around key aspects that may require future improvements. \nUseful resources \n\nOpenverse website\nOpenverse Technological Framework (general)\nOpenverse wiki – Technological Framework\nOpenverse Observatory\n\n\nAGENDA\n\n\n\n\n10:00-10:10 \n\n\nIntroduction and Strategic Context\n• Introduction to OPENVERSE (Lukasz Powrol\, Insight Centre)\n• Objectives of the session\n• Overview of the OPENVERSE Technological Framework \n\n\n\n\n10:10-10:50 \n\n\nBlock 1: Blockchain and Digital Identity – Project Presentations\n• Speaker 1: Cesare Marzo (Namirial) – European Digital Identity Wallet and its relevance to the metaverse\n• Speaker 2: Emmanouil Spannakis (Trialog) – LICORICE Project \n\n\n\n\n10:50-11:10 \n\n\nBlock 1: Blockchain and Digital Identity – Open Discussion\n• Open discussion on Blockchain and digital identity as building blocks for virtual worlds \n\n\n\n\n11:10-11:50 \n\n\nBlock 2: Photonics and Electronics – Overview and Open Discussion\n• Speaker from the OPENVERSE Team – Discussing photonics and electronics within the OPENVERSE Technological Framework\n• Open discussion on photonics and electronics as building blocks for virtual worlds \n\n\n\n\n11:50-12:00 \n\n\nWrap up and Closing Remarks\n• Summary of key insights\n• Positioning within OPENVERSE \n\n\n\n\n  \nRegistrations are now open here

SUMMARY:Developing human-centric Virtual Worlds in Europe: National and regional best practices - An OPENVERSE Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Worlds represent a transformative domain with vast potential to revolutionize how people interact\, learn\, work\, and innovate. Across Europe\, national initiatives have emerged to drive the development and adoption of Virtual World technologies. However\, the landscape remains fragmented\, and greater collaboration and community-building efforts are needed to amplify the collective impact of these initiatives. \nThis workshop – held as an on-invitation only event – aims to address this need by fostering dialogue\, collaboration\, and knowledge-sharing among key stakeholders from various national and regional initiatives. By learning from existing experiences and collectively shaping the path forward\, the workshop seeks to create a strong foundation for the development of human-centric Virtual Worlds across Europe.
