Spatial Shuts Down Creator Platform and 3D Worlds in 2026

Spatial, the technology company focused on immersive digital experiences, virtual collaboration, and 3D social environments. announced the closure of its Creator platform as the company shifts focus toward original game development through Wooster Games.

After nearly a decade of enabling creators to build immersive virtual worlds, Spatial has announced that it will sunset its Free and Pro subscription tiers and discontinue hosting for Creator platform 3D Worlds effective July 27, 2026. The decision marks the end of an era for the platform’s independent creators, artists, and communities who used Spatial to develop interactive digital spaces ranging from virtual galleries and social hubs to experimental multiplayer experiences.

In a statement released by co-founder Jinha Lee and the Spatial team, the company acknowledged the significance of the transition and praised the community that helped shape the platform. “Every time we explored what you’d made, we were humbled by your ingenuity and imagination,” the statement read. “The worlds you built and the experiences you shared helped shape Spatial, and will continue to inspire where we go next.”

“Social VR platforms should be treated as social infrastructure, not disposable products. For Europe, digital sovereignty must mean the ability to independently maintain not only our digital infrastructure, but also our digital culture. When virtual worlds close, communities lose venues, archives, creative work, relationships, and shared histories built over years. Platform sunsets and business pivots are therefore ethical governance questions, which should be subject to ethical and human-first consideration. That should apply even to US-based platforms, such as Spatial and Rec Room, where many European citizens do not merely participate and create, but in effect co-create the cultures cultivated therein. The loss of these US-based social VR platforms means the loss of real parts of our contemporary European culture.”

What’s Changing

Beginning July 27, 2026:

  • Spatial’s Free and Pro subscription tiers will be discontinued.
  • Hosting for Creator platform 3D Worlds will end.
  • Creator-uploaded assets stored on Spatial’s servers will be permanently deleted after the shutdown date.

The company clarified that the change does not affect Spatial Enterprise customers. Enterprise services will remain operational and continue to receive support under existing agreements.

Why Spatial Is Shutting Down the Creator Platform

According to the company, rising infrastructure costs tied to hosting and scaling open multiplayer 3D environments ultimately made the Creator platform unsustainable.

Spatial said it explored several alternatives, including revised pricing structures, tiered hosting plans, and partnerships, but concluded that maintaining the platform would require costs that independent creators and small studios could not reasonably absorb.

“Rather than allow the creator experience to gradually degrade or become unaffordable, we’ve chosen to make the difficult decision to sunset this part of the platform with full transparency,” the company stated.

Spatial says it is taking steps to help creators preserve their work before the shutdown.

Spatial’s Next Chapter: Wooster Games

While winding down its Creator platform, Spatial revealed it has spent the past two years building an internal game studio called Wooster Games.

The studio is focused on developing original social gaming experiences and intellectual property, leveraging lessons learned from nearly a decade of immersive platform development.

Its first title, Animal Company, reportedly helped the company identify a stronger long-term direction centered on “deeply social, imaginative experiences.”

“Going forward, we’ll focus our efforts on developing and expanding our own original IP through Wooster Games”

The Spatial Team

Despite the shutdown, Spatial emphasized that the creative philosophy behind the platform will continue to influence its future projects.

“The spirit of what made Spatial special lives on in this work”
